Active Optical Sensing - 383K
Supervisor: Gary Spiers, 818.354.7831, Gary.D.Spiers@jpl.nasa.gov

The Active Optical Sensing Group develops novel laser based sensors and instruments from concept through to inclusion in space flight systems. Instrument development within the group includes sensors for science applications such as the Laser Absorption Spectrometer for Carbon Dioxide sink and source detection and the Laser Reflectance Spectrometer for solar system body spectroscopy as well as concept development activities such as an instrument for screening for extra-terrestrial bio-chemistry. Engineering sensors include lidar altimeters, imagers and velocimeters for entry, descent and landing on solar system bodies as well as active optical metrology systems for large space based structures. The group has been in existence at JPL since the 1970s and was formerly known as the Laser Remote Sensing Group.
