Section 383 - Optics

The Optics Section (383) is part of the Instruments and Science Data Systems Division (380) at JPL. Section 383's leadership and expertise are specifically applied to the development of advanced ground and space-based optical systems in the following areas: research and development of optics-related technologies; system architecture and concept definition; detailed optical system design, analysis and implementation; and integration, test and calibration of optical instruments and systems.

Section Core Capabilities

  • Optical design
  • Optical modeling and analysis
  • Picometer-class metrology
  • Wavefront sensing and control

These core capabilities are most frequently applied in support of the following optical systems, in which Section 383 has unique experience and expertise:

  • Active and adaptive optics
  • High contrast imaging
  • Space-borne optical instruments
  • Stellar interferometry
