Section 382's core capabilities include: advanced instrument concept development, project system engineering, instrument system engineering, instrument integration and test, technology infusion, life detection technologies, sample handling technologies, control and monitoring technologies for manned missions, ground-based and space-based microwave instruments, and airborne infrared instrument development and operations.

Section 383's leadership and expertise are specifically applied to the development of advanced ground and space-based optical systems in the following areas: research and development of optics-related technologies; system architecture and concept definition; detailed optical system design, analysis and implementation; and integration, test and calibration of optical instruments and systems.

Section 388 provides end-to-end software systems in support of Planetary, Earth, Astrophysics and non-NASA missions. The section also researches and prototypes advanced computing and information technologies for infusion into future missions. Integration of technology development, software development and operations teams ensure the system engineering of a comprehensive end-to-end instrument software system.

Section 389 is responsible for the development and delivery of sensors, instruments and electronics technologies needed by JPL/NASA to enable new terrestrial, astrophysics, and planetary in situ and remote science experiments and observations. The Section provides research and technology for science instrument as well as flight instrument engineering. It uses the Microdevices Laboratory (MDL), which provides end-to-end capabilities and services for micro- and nano-devices fabrication and characterization.
